Great value; high quality
At the price, this is a great tent. The quality is there and it compares well to tents twice the price for a weight penalty of only a few ounces. I set mine up side-by-side with my friend's $250 REI quarter dome T2. He was impressed, and the only differences I noted on his were reflective guy lines, an included pole splint ($5) and a lighter fly. Plus more footroom on his. However, his fly lacked the little windows on the Alps: I actually used mine to check on another camper who was near my bike in the morning. Here are the only downsides I can find so far with the Zephyr:1) The footprint is hard to find. Search for "floor saver."2) There are partial sleeves so you cannot pitch the footprint/fly and then be sheltered to pitch the rest of the tent. However, you can pitch just footprint (not included) and fly for a light shelter.3) With the fly door unzipped all the way, water can enter the tent. Just don't unzip all the way if it...

Well thought out, great value, high quality tent
I have not camped in this tent yet. I will give my first impressions and hopefully update the review after using the tent. This tent has all the features of tents costing twice as much. It is a great value. The quality appears to be top notch. The aluminum poles are small and lightweight but fit together perfectly and are strong.I did a lot of research before purchasing this tent. I liked that it has two doors and two vestibules. Also, I am very weight conscious and the 4.7 lbs is pretty good for this size tent. From my research I would have only saved maybe 3 ounces for a higher priced tent and would have had to settle for one door, one vestibule.Overall, great value for the money. I am very impressed with the quality of Alps Mountaineering.UPDATE 11/17/2008 - I finally had the chance to camp in the Zephyr 2. My 5 year old son and I hiked and camped with a friend and his boys. It was getting dark and starting to rain when we got to the camp site. The Zephyr...

Good tent
Took this tent out for the first time last weekend to do some hiking in the Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest with my girlfriend. Setup was very easy, it took maybe 5 minutes or so. Inside was a little cramped for two people, just make sure you're very close with whoever you're sharing the tent with, because you'll pretty much be sleeping elbow to elbow. We were both able to use a sleeping pad with a little bit of overlap in the middle. I'm about 6'1 or so and I did notice that when I laid down on my back my feet would graze the mesh at the end of the tent, not really a big deal though, at least not for me. There was plenty of headroom so I was able to sit up without my head touching mesh.As far as rain protection goes, I was pretty impressed with this tent. We endured very heavy rain on and off throughout the evening and night. The tent kept us very dry. I only have one complaint, there was one spot where the poles crossed at the top of the tent where the fly seemed to leak a...

First new tent in 15 years. Dry during 8 hour down pour!
This tent was everything i hoped it would be. i did not intend to test it out the way i did on it's first outing... I read the reviews and even set up several tents in a local store before deciding on the catalyst 3 (Chaos 3) tent from ALPS. i took it out on an over night backpacking trip this weekend and man did i test it out. the downpour started at about 2am and it did not let up until i was home on my couch at 12 in the afternoon. my wife and i were dry and warm the entire night and in the morning i took the tent down inside of the dry safety of the rain fly and the footprint, I did not get wet until i had to take down the rain-fly! however by that time i had packed EVERYTHING else and only had to deal with the fly and footprint. i would say that this tent was the single best piece of equipment i have bought for my wife, dog and i to go backpacking with yet. it sets up in under 5 minutes including staking it out and weighs only 5-6 pounds which i think is fine for a 3 person tent...

Great tent for the price!
I bought this tent for a light and comfortable backpacking tent. I am 6'2" tall so I had to find a light tent that I could use for two people and still be able to stow our gear. I have plenty of room in this tent alone and expect the same with a second person inside; assuming they are not bigger than me.This past weekend I had a Boy Scout campout with my son so I decided to give it a try. First of all, it is very easy to set up! Poles are very light and easy to extend(snap in place!). The rain fly was just as easy to install. The first night, it rained from midnight to 6am. I never got wet! I did get a little cold because I had both vents open on the fly. The second night, it began raining at 2am and did not stop until we went home the next day; I closed both vents and stayed a lot warmer! Dry again. If there is one draw back to this tent, it would be the side guy-line loop for the rain fly. It does allow you to secure it close to the tent which I...

You won't be disappointed!
Just got back from a rainy camping trip and my first time using the Chaos 2. I was really impressed when I had woke up in the morning and couldn't find a drop of water in the tent even though it had been pouring literally all night. There is plenty of ventilation which kept any sort of condensation build up out of the tent. I'm 5'9 and my girlfriend is 5'2 and we both had more than enough room with our packs inside. Not to mention the 2 vestibules were great for storing our extra gear out of the rain. Freestanding and extremely easy to set up. You really can't find another tent that shares the same quality as Alps Mountaineering tents for anywhere near the cost.

Best tent for the dollar
I am a GEARhead. I own or have owned over 30 tents plus all the fixings... Both backpacking as well as car camping. This tent as far as I know did not exist when I rewalked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer through California. Had it, I would've of used the 1.5 model. After getting home and settling in from my walk I ran across both the 1.5 and 2. I own both now and can say they both are killer deals in their price range. And yes I own SD, REI, Kelty, Coleman/Exponent, Moss, Slumberjack Bivy (I used) and on and on and on... I have tried many while hiking in the Olympic Mountains in WA. I would put this model(s) up against any listed. If you have money to burn yes there are some that may be better at lasting a little longer but I question that too... and yes you can go lighter in weight... but by going lighter you'll give up a lot of comfort and the security you get knowing that you have a shelter that will handle just about anything Mother nature throws at you. Alps other models I'm...

Fantastic tent for the money
I used this tent two weeks ago on a winter camping trip. I was quite impressed with the overall quality for the money. The material feels strong and tear-resistant. The poles are well constructed and lightweight. Set-up is easy, although, because it is a two-pole tent, I had to improvise as I was camping in loose snow and wasn't able to make the stakes stay to give it structure (ended up using my own tree branch stakes). This would not be an issue in any other season. Regardless, it stayed bone dry in several feet of snow and protected me, a friend, and my dog from some harsh winds. Entry and exit is simple and convenient. Zippers felt of good quality and did not snag. On a final note, the tent was able to easily accommodate me (6'5", 210lbs), my friend (6'0", 175 lbs), and my 40lb dog with big winter sleeping bags and some gear inside. Would definitely recommend for this price range!

Product Description

The Mystique 2 utilizes a lightweight 2-pole design with shock corded 7000 series aluminum poles. The walls are a breathable nylon taffeta. The polyester fly and nylon floor are urethane coated, with factory sealed seams for maximum weatherproofness. Entry and exit are easy with 2 doors and 2 vestibules. We have added an additional rear fly zipper for our 2006 models to make getting in and out of your tent even easier. Ventilation is fantastic with the 2 large mesh doors and the end mesh panels. The full coverage fly keeps you dry in even the biggest rain storms and the large vestibules form "porches" to give you places to store extra gear ... and to look outside without getting soaked! A vent is placed on the end of the fly to increase ventilation even further. It has the option of being zipped open or closed, depending upon the weather. Mesh storage pockets are included inside the tent to help you keep track of your small valuables. Instructions are sewn into the tent storage bag so you never have to worry about not having them with you. All stakes and guy ropes are included. Top to learn more

An elevated door opening keeps the inside of the tent clean and dry, while the gear loft provides a handy spot to stow small essentials.
The ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 2.0 tent is a two-pole, freestanding tent that features water-tight construction, extra heavy duty zippers, two mesh doors for easy entry and optimal ventilation, and two vestibules for gear storage and added weather protection. A 7000 Series shock-corded aluminum pole frame is lightweight yet strong, and assembly takes only moments thanks to a simple, clip-based design. Factory-sealed components throughout, combined with urethane-coated materials, keep the elements at bay when the weather turns nasty, while the interior tent's mesh roof optimizes ventilation to reduce condensation.

The Mystique provides an ideal combination of waterproof breathability, thanks to permeable nylon taffeta walls and urethane-coated polyester rainfly and floor. The full coverage rainfly keeps you dry in even the most torrential downpours, while mesh vents on either end of the fly can be zipped open or closed based on weather conditions. Mesh storage pockets throughout the interior offer convenient storage of small essentials, and instructions are cleverly sewn directly into the tent's storage bag, so you never have to worry about forgetting how to pitch the tent while the storm clouds are gathering overhead.

Included with your purchase is the Mystique tent, rainfly, 7000 Series aluminum poles, 6061 aluminum stakes, pole and stake bags, guy ropes, repair swatches, internal gear loft, mesh storage pocket, and tent bag.

Good product, great price
Picked up this tent as it was cheaper than pretty much every other tent out there (@$125 it's a great price) and the reviews for it were all great. Took it out for a Spring trip in New Hampshire and it performed great. It doesn't need much space to set up, is pretty easy to put together, and stayed completely dry (inside) in some pretty variable weather that caused a lot of dew all around.Only complaints I have are fairly minor and are not at all 'deal-killers'. Due to the tent's somewhat awkward footprint, it's a little bit of a trick to fold it single person (unlike a rectangular dome or half-dome, you just can't go edge-to-edge) and I'm a bit OCD, it's a bit tough to set up 'ideally' (no slack in the tent edges, seams close to the ground) but is easy to set up 'good-enough', it's on the smaller side for two people (I am 6' my girlfriend is 5'4" and while we both fit - we did have some overlapping thermarests which was not a problem for us - gear obviously stored under the...

Exceeded expectations--very impressed
These words are from a life-long Eureka fan: The Extreme 3 is the first ALPS Mountaineering tent I've ever purchased, and it won't be the last.[Disclosure: I paid a few extra dollars to get the "Outfitter" model that comes with a heavier floor. I want to get as much life out of this tent as is possible, and know I tend to camp where there tends to be a fair amount of rock under the tent. The models are identical except for the different floor material, and possibly the color of the guy lines.]When I finally convinced my wife to come along with me on a trip to the Boundary Waters, I knew we'd need a good tent. It had been some years since I last had a Eureka Timberline (which I've also reviewed, giving it five stars as well), and I must admit that getting another one was my preference. I've read much about ALPS lately, and have talked to many Scouts and Scout leaders who use them (typically the Merimac) for their troop camping, so I convinced myself to wait...

This is a great tent.
I'm really happy with this tent and don't think I could have made a better choice other than getting the Outfitter model with heavier floor material. I purchased it for a motorcycle trip through the Rockies and back through the Black Hills after I realized my old tent had finally given up the ghost and was unrepairable. I did a lot of research before making my choice considering Eureka, Marmot, Mountain Hardware and several other brands. Like most reviewers will tell you it's a little heavy for back packing, and you'll probably need to split the load between 2 people. However, it packs small and was easy to carry on the bike. It is truly a 2 adult person tent. You might get a 3rd person in it if they are small, but it will be very tight. The floor protector foot print is an absolute must, or else use a tarp. Be warned the floor protector is also light fabric and developed 2 small holes on the first trip. Police your camp site well before settin it up. A heavier material would have...

The ALPS Mountaineering Extreme 3 (#5332618) is a free standing aluminum pole tent, with a configuration that is extremely strong and sturdy. The 3-pole design gives you more "framework" to combat Mother Nature when she decides to send you a little stronger storm than normal. Assembly is easy with pole clips that quickly snap over the tent poles. The polyester fly and floor are urethane coated, with factory sealed seams for maximum weatherproofness. A door on each side of the tent makes getting in and out of the tent easy. You also get two large vestibules that you can use for extra gear storage. The vestibules also serve as automatic guy-out points when the weather gets a little nasty. The fly buckles to the tent, offering a much more secure attachment when compared to elastic cord. Extra large #8 zippers on the doors and vestibules add to the durability. Mesh roof vents increase ventilation and improve star gazing. olddog
Great tent. It's really just for 2 persons, although 3 could possibly fit - it would be very crowded. The tent went up easy enough. I would have liked better directions. I figured it out, and when it was set up, and I was inside the tent - why, there was the directions sewn into the inside! Weird! And those directions were not very clear to me. The poles worked fine, however when I broke it down the middle pole sections are slightly bent. I'm hoping that it's no big deal, and will not affect the tent - wont know until I put it up again. Zippers all worked good, and it's a nice tent for two, as I've stated. Sorta heavy to use "backpacking", so I'm stapping it to the bottom of my external frame pack. I sorta wish I would have went lighter...as in "Mountain Hardware" tent.

Bomber tent for an umatchable price.
ALPS Mountaineering makes some of the best tents I've ever used and they are by far the best price. These are easily on par with tents that cost 2-3 times as much and they come with all the bells and whistles instead of having to buy them after you've already bought the tent. 2 huge vestibules, a gear nest, 2 windows and multiple storage pockets. I love this tent.I had a problem with my Lynx, one of the poles broke when a branch fell on my tent. I called ALPS and they rushed me a new pole, no questions asked. From then on I've sworn by ALPS.The only bad product I had from them has been the Denali pack, every one of their tents have been absolutely stellar.

Perfect for our purposes
We have an Alps Mountaineering Edge-4, which looks the same, has the same specs, and is even the same color. I've not ever seen the Edge listed on Amazon, so I'm reviewing this instead. If you don't feel it's comparable, just stop reading now. We bought this as a step up from our test-tent when we first started camping again last summer. It's incredibly easy to put up and break down. We're just a couple with a full-sized air mattress, so the room is ample. The gear loft is good for putting our tiny LED lantern up high and keep little things handy. We can sit inside and play cards if it's chilly, get dressed easily, and keep all our stuff inside. I love the fly, although I'm not used to the kind that goes all the way down the sides, but it's very cozy. Like another reviewer said, the windows are a little cheezy, but we do like them, if only to see exactly how late it is when we awake, or if it's clear to run to the car in underwear (before the next family over wakes up). We use the...

The Lynx has more mesh than the Taurus, taking up half of the walls on each side allowing even more ventilation. The tent is an easy to set up, 2 pole rectangular dome style tent with pole clips that easily fit over the poles for quick assembly. ALPS has not cut any corners…between the factory sealed fly and floor seams, weatherproof fly buckles, 2 doors for easy entering and leaving, 2 vestibules for extra gear storage and weather protection, and extra large #8 zippers, you’re sure to find everything you could want in a tent, in this model. Similar to the Taurus--one of ALPS' best-selling tents--the Lynx four-person tent is an ideal choice for warm evenings. The tent's body is made of lightweight but strong polyester taffeta fabrics, with a multi-pass urethane coating on the full-coverage fly and floor providing maximum weather protection. However, the Lynx offers more ventilation than the Taurus, with mesh taking up half the walls on each side. As a result, you can rest easy on muggy nights or stargaze happily on cloud-free evenings. The Lynx is also easy to assemble, with a freestanding two-pole design that includes 7000 series aluminum poles and secure pole clips. And to further protect the tent's interior from moisture, the Lynx offers factory seals on the seams and floor and weatherproof fly buckles. The design helps the tent resist rainy, windy weather conditions.

Other details include two doors for easy entry and exit during midnight bathroom trips, two vestibules for gear storage, and extra-large #8 zippers that make it a breeze to open and close the doors. Outfitted with a tent bag for transport, the Lynx also comes in a two-person version.

Great tent
We got this tent as a rental from an outfitter. We were surprised, we were expecting a Kelty Gundison. We did not despair, figuring the outfitters knew what they were doing. We weren't disappointed either. This tent is light, compact. It weighs the same and is only slightly bigger when compressed than our ten year old three man backpacking tent (Eureka Pinnacle). It is a breeze to put up. My husband managed it the first time in the dark and the rain in just a few minutes. The two-pole clip system that many of these tents have is great for this. Looking at the build quality, it seemed sturdier than a similar REI tent we looked at. (The clips looked thicker and the floor didn't feel as thin). We got a ground cloth which we used and a gear loft which we didn't. I think my favorite feature about this tent is the awesome vents in the fly that pop open and still keep you dry. There are also clear plastic windows in the fly which are kind of cheesy, but it's nice to be able to see...

Great tent for the money
We got the Vertex 4 on Amazon last year for $149. My husband and I have used this tent for two seasons of fall elk hunting in Northern Wyoming. Last year we had to shovel an imprint out of 4 feet of snow and it worked great. It's a little loud in the rain but is a good tent when you need something that will stand up to solid wind gusts. There is plenty of room for us and our clothes though I wouldn't want to try sleeping 3 adults in this tent. The vestibules are not terribly big but they do the job for boots and wet stuff. We liked the fact that there are two entrances and vestibules to keep "his and hers" gear separate. Material seem solid for the price, I have been careful with the zippers because I wasn't sure if they would hold on the "tight sections" but so far they have held up. All in all, a great tent for what we paid for it.

Alps Tents

Regardless, we’ve tested and personally used dozens of ALPS tents in the past—and if history holds true these tents are well made and designed to be a reliable shelter for the long term. Backpackers looking for an ultra-light tent will need to consider whether the positive features of the tent favorably outweigh the extra ounces. The tent appears to have a “bathtub” floor, but in reality, there are seams running at ground level around the perimeter of the tent. The is a three-person, three-season tent focusing on sturdiness and detail-oriented construction. however, with the rain fly secured in place visibility is reduced to the vents on the roof of the tent. The three tent poles are constructed of 7000-series aluminum, the same substance used in many aerospace and automotive applications. The combined vestibule area is 36 square feet, extremely roomy for a backpacker’s tent. The design configuration of the tent gives an interior height that is an outstanding 50 inches of space.

The ALPS Mountaineering Chaos accessories involve a tent bag, aluminum stakes, stake and pole bags, guy out ropes, gear loft, repair swatches, and mesh storage pockets all which contribute in making this a highly desirable camping tent among... The tent is manufactured using shock corded 7000 series aluminum poles that could be fixed as one complete unit with the tent just by using snap clips on the poles. If you are an experienced camper who prefers to travel lightweight and if you are looking for camping gear exclusively designed to accommodate three or less people, then you will be more than happy to find to see the value for price ALPS... I am hoping and assuming I can repair it. But then again, I guess it’s not the fault of the tent but more of the clumsy oath that stepped on my tent. Although it can certainly accommodate for a couple people you’d find this tent very cozy for a couple of people and this also allows ample cabinet space for your personal camping gear as well. There are plenty of versatile benefits associated with the ALPS Mountaineering Chaos especially those that come from the viewpoint of campers who look out for flexible, lightweight and low-cost options for their camping arrangements. The ALPS Mountaineering Chaos features a vestibule one for each of the doors for storage requirements. The ALPS Mountaineering Chaos features a freestanding design that has a sturdy pole which will withstand over the harshest climatic conditions. A sturdy frame, weather resistant fabric, lightweight features and comparative low price, all explain the big popularity of this tent. It is completely crafted from a urethane-coated factory sealed full cover material and also the fly can easily be securely fastened towards the tents using buckles as a substitute for a normal elastic cord.  If there is one drawback to this tent, it could be the side guy-line loop for the rain fly.

Despite the price difference, this tent is of the same quality as far as materials, workmanship, and design go. I was under the impression that Alps just copied others designs and that they saved their money in R&D. But this tent disproves that. On the advice of someone who owns a fleet of tents for commercial use I purchased this tent from the Alps Company. This is a 3 season tent but it will keep you warm and dry if you use a well designed insulated sleeping mat like the Exped downmats combined with a good sleeping bag. The footprint did its job well because the ground did freeze that night and I know it provided an insulating layer as well as protect the floor of the tent. We "guestimated" the windes at 20-40mph and tempuratures dipped into the low 20's F. I secured the tent with the supplied guy lines and aluminum stakes before turning in for the night and I was glad I took the extra steps. I know MSR used to provide the 3-sided stakes with some of their tents and that may be the only thing that is clearly superior to this.

The guying that comes with the tent for the fly works well to hold off the fly from the tent to keep condensation and moisture out of the tent. I pitched the tent in soft soil, but in harder soil conditions I would recommend stouter tent stakes (short top-hook aluminum come with the tent). This tent is more than I expected-lightweight aluminum pole system set up easily, especially with the clips that fasten the tent to the pole structure. The fly completely covers the tent so there’s no drip line on the tent itself. The two vestibules are key storage space outside the tent and not found on many tents. Product Description ALPS Mountaineering Vertex Backpacking 4 – Person Tent… easy to assemble and lightweight. The Vertex 4 frame is made with strong and lightweight aircraft alloy aluminum poles and assembly is easy with tent clips that snap into place over the poles. com Featuring a single continuous pole design, the Vertex 4 is a free-standing tent enhanced with two doors for easy entry and two vestibules for gear storage and extra weather protection. The top of the tent has a spreader section for increased head room and with factory sealed fly and floor seams, you’re sure to stay dry in rainy weather. Once you reach base camp, assembly is a cinch… just snap the tent clips in place over the strong and lightweight alloy aluminum poles. The fly buckles to the tent, offering a secure attachment and the mesh roof vents increase ventilation and improves star gazing.
