I loved this book! The tips section alone was worth the price of the book, especially for a novice like myself. These people really know what they are talking about. I love having a book that can lays open or fold back - smart idea to have it spiral bound. Its good to know I can try the receipes at home and know the ones I like best before we go camping. Excellant Cast Iron Primer & Outdoors Cookbook
A good cook book and meal-planner for the novice dutch oven and/or camping cook. Includes many tips for the beginner in outdoors dutch oven cooking. However, needs explanation of some of the ingredients, 'Rhodes Rolls'? 'Texas Bake & Serves'? These are apparently regional pre-made frozen-bread items, available only out West. Also the recipe for chocolate cake on pg 130 doesn't include any chocolate/cocoa? Both of the above are very minor complaints (whatever happened to adventures in cooking) about an otherwise excellant outdoors cook book. Top to learn more

One more gadget but worth it.
They could give away dutch ovens if everyone would promise to buy all the accessories. At first I made do with a hooked piece of wire but after dropping ashes in the pot and almost burning myself a few times I got the lid lifter. It's actually quite useful.You can leave it on the lid and it stays in place. The handle is long enough that the heat doesn't seem to travel up and make it too hot to hold. The "wings" adjacent to the hook brace on the lid so when you pick the lid up it doesn't wobble or tilt (which is when the ashes would drop on your food!).The hook also works well to grab the scalding hot bail of the Dutch Oven to carry or reposition the whole oven. For even cooking the standard practice is to rotate the oven one way and the lid the other way every once in a while- that way any hot spots from the coals will spread around. This tool lets you safely do both. Also you don't really have to lift the lid to rotate it- which would let heat out.

Don't buy a Dutch Oven without one
I made the big mistake of getting a Dutch Oven and not ordering this at the same time. Pliers don't work, gloves don't work, a fireplace poker doesn't work. The lid lifter makes removing the lid to check on your food a simple, stable and ash-free process. Don't make the same mistake I did. When you buy your Dutch Oven, buy the lid lifter.

Practical easy to use book
I have been using a dutch oven since I was a youth in scouts. This book has clear instructions on how to: assemble a successful recipe, number of coals, location of coals and cooking time make for a success every time. The quality and diversity of recipes is outstanding. The guide at the beginning is also useful on oven care and how to regulate temperature. Top to learn more
Excellent book--it gets used almost daily
My boyfriend has a lot of cast iron--in fact, they are his pots of choice to use. However, he didn't have a lot of recipes for his dutch ovens. I took a chance and ordered this book for him. He absolutely loves it. The recipes are easy to read, understand, and use. The results are delicious. He refers to it almost daily, and is constantly trying new recipes out of it. Nice book, but not my kind of cooking
This is a nice little cookbook, with very clear directions for temperatures and numbers of coals and where to place them. Most of the recipes are intended for 12" dutch ovens, although I'm sure they could be adapted for other sizes.My main quarrel with the book is that many of the recipes are not for the kind of camp cooking that I do. About 1/4 of the recipes are for yeast breads/rolls. If this is the way you want to use your dutch oven, there are some great sounding recipes here! However, this isn't the way I cook when I am camping. A few other recipes call for a special "Camp Chef Ultimate" dutch oven. Then there are the recipes calling for cornish game hens, mutton, orange zest, asiago cheese, almond extract, red wine, white chocolate, or toasted pine nuts. Again, if this is the kind of cooking you want to do with your dutch oven, I'm sure the recipes are great, but it isn't my style.Of the remaining recipes, several are the traditional camp fare -... Great Oven, great for emergency situations or loss of power!
This new oven is so slick and has so many uses. I have only run it on the disposable propane bottles, but it can be run off a bulk tank.I was really impressed with how good it would hold the heat and how it is almost silent. We were running it for a few minutes and I thought it wasn't hot yet and I looked at the temp gauge and it said 370 degrees. the burners on top are much better than the standard double burners, they are 5300 BTU and Brass to resist rusting.I think the insulation must be really good since it holds the heat great.The disposable bottle will last about 6 hours on high for the oven, since you are not always using High, it can last much longer.Review out of 5 starsEASE OF USE 5 starsQUALITY 5 starsValue 5 starsProlots of uses, easy to use disposable bottleauto light featuremuch bigger inside than it looksConshandles on side don't go in very fardoesn't... Camp Chef HRL replacement hose and regulator won't work with this stove
The Camp Chef 2-burner Stove and Oven (in a single unit) appears to be very well made (I bought one in my Amazon order but haven't used it yet per the following) and this is not a review of the stove itself. Amazon currently shows it as frequently bought with the "Camp Chef HRL replacement hose and regulator, 1 PSI". The picture of the latter item leads one to believe that it functions as a hose adaptor for a common bulk tank of propane (which come in varying sizes). Unfortunately this hose is not made for this model Camp Chef stove. The stove-end will not fit the fitting on the stove nor is a regulator required on the other end since the stove comes with one (known only when one opens the box). I'm returning the hose and I should say that Amazon's return procedures are quite streamlined.The regulator that comes with the stove screws onto a stove-fitting through a hole in the back of the stove, and a small one-pound bottle of propane screws into the other side of the... Great Old Time Recipes
I own quite a collection of cookbooks that specialize in old west style cooking. (Most of them can be found on Amazon and are reviewed by me here as well.) The kind that if someone was to submit a recipe that mentioned sushi, they would be hanged at sunrise. This one is one of my newest entries and already becoming one of my favorites. Most of my others cover a broad spectrum of cooking like most cookbooks do. That is side dishes, deserts, vegetarian dishes and so on. This one sticks to its guns in specializing in dutch oven meals. Soups, stews, and specialties cooked in a big covered pot. To me there has never been any kind of cooking ever invented that beat the flavor and wholesome goodness of a one pot dinner. They were always wonderful with more than enough to go around for each plate. This book does a mouth watering job of covering hundreds of them. I recommend this book to all of you that miss the nostalgic days of one pot meals, and for the delicious memories that it can... Top to learn more

This is the best dutch oven cooking book around!
I don't usually buy cookbooks any more becuase you can usually find any recipe you want on the web and you don't have to house the cookbooks. I saw this cookbook in a store one day and there were so many great recipes and good information that I bought it for my husband as a gift. It is the best collection of information on dutch oven cooking and recipes I have ever seen and I own a number of dutch oven cook books already. It has many great recipes and even has a recipe for dutch oven ice cream, no kidding. It is just really great. I would reccommend this book to beginners as well as seasoned cooks (no pun intended). An iron skillet actually adds nutritional value to items cooked in it. Some of the iron is actually leeched into the food while cooking. Because let’s face it, those iron skillets are going to outlast me. Since inheriting the iron skillets, I’ve been able to master cooking just about anything in them. Unfortunately, my pop pop had a stroke in December of 2010 that left him unable to cook with his beloved iron skillet. It was with a heavy heart that I inherited two of his iron skillet and an iron pot.
